Herpes and Lasers

There are many types of lazers used to reduce fine wrinkles and smooth the face.

After laser resurfacing, the skin is red, swollen, and itchy. It is always advised to prescibe an anti-viral prescription whether or not the patient knows of a positive history for oral herpes or genital herpes. This recommendation is based on the results of a study published in the September 1999 issue of the journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This study compared the outcomes of patients who took the anti-viral medication with those who did not. The study found a significant reduction in outbreaks for the control group taking the anti-virals for seven days, starting one to two days before the laser treatment. Still there are no guarantees and a herpes outbreak could cause pain, pigment, infection, or scarring.

If a patient has an active cold sore before the procedure, they should reschedule until it is totally healed. Discuss everything with your doctor at the consultation.
